Alissa M. Fitzgerald, Ph.D., Founder & Managing Member
Dr. Fitzgerald founded the company in 2003. She has over 20 years of engineering experience in MEMS design, fabrication and product development. Having developed more than a dozen distinct MEMS devices, such as piezoresistive cantilevers, ultrasound transducers, and infrared imagers, she now advises clients on the entire cycle of microelectronic product development, from business and IP strategy to supply chain and manufacturing operations. Prior to founding AMFitzgerald, Dr. Fitzgerald worked in engineering positions at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Orbital Sciences Corporation, Sigpro, and Sensant Corporation, now part of Siemens. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees from MIT and her doctorate from Stanford University in Aeronautics and Astronautics. Dr. Fitzgerald has numerous journal publications, holds seven patents, and is a frequent presenter at professional meetings. She served as a director on the MEMS Industry Group's (MIG) Governing Council from 2008-2014. In 2013, she was inducted into the MIG Hall of Fame. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Transducer Research Foundation and Rigetti Computing.
Charles C. Chung, Ph.D., Design, Test & Integration
Dr. Chung has over 24 years of engineering experience with MEMS devices and microsystems. He is a member of the University of Pennsylvania's Singh Nanotechnology Center's Advisory Board. He has worked on multiple MEMS devices, including wireless sensor nodes, implantable biosensors, microvalves, DNA sequencing chips, microphones, gyroscopes, accelerometers, and pressure sensors. His microdevice experience spans from technology and market analysis, device design and simulation, prototyping and packaging, software and algorithm development, to testing and volume production. He has worked at Intel Corporation, General MEMS, LV Sensors, Atmel, and Halcyon Molecular. He received his B.A. in Physics, Astrophysics, & Environmental Studies from the University of Pennsylvania, M.S. in Physics from Duke University, and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Daniel S. Contreras, Ph.D., Design, Analysis & Fabrication
Dr. Contreras has 5 years of experience in MEMS design and fabrication. His main work has focused on developing electrostatic gap closing actuator-based inchworm motors and silicon linkages, all for application in walking microrobots and other microrobotic systems. He has experience working with MEMS devices from early conception, analysis, and design, through to process flow design, fabrication, circuit design, and device testing. He received his bachelor’s in Physics from Pomona College and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from University of California, Berkeley.
Catherine Guittard, Finance & Operations
Ms. Guittard has over 15 years in the high technology industry and is responsible for managing the company's finances and operations. She has a diverse background, working with small startups as well as large multinational corporations including Apple, Cisco Systems, and Symbol Technologies. Ms. Guittard has a B.S. in Business and Information Systems, is a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor and has received professional certifications in finance, HR management, and employment law.
Kimberly L. Harrison, Ph.D., Design, Analysis & Fabrication
Dr. Harrison has 6 years of experience in process engineering and microdevice development. As an academic researcher and industry consultant, she has previously worked with universities, start-ups and large corporations to develop new device designs and fabrication processes in a wide variety of applications, including photovoltaics, resonators, integrated CMOS-MEMS circuits, inertial sensors and novel semiconductor materials. She has been involved in all stages of the device life cycle including need-finding, research, design, modeling, simulation, process planning, fabrication, characterization and testing. Dr. Harrison received her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at MIT and M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University.
Min He, MEMS Process Development & Fabrication
Ms. He has over 27 years of hands on experience in semiconductor and MEMS processing, and over 18 years of experience in fabricating optical MEMS devices. She was previously lead process engineer for Iris AO, Inc., responsible for the process development, fabrication and continual process improvement of five different deformable mirror products. She was a key player in the DiCon MEMS R&D group that successfully commercialized cutting edge optical MEMS products including VOA, 1x2, 1x4, 1x8 optical switches. She has extensive knowledge and experience with a broad range of MEMS surface and bulk micro-machining processes. She received her Master’s degree from University of Puerto Rico in Physics.
Michael A. Helmbrecht, Ph.D., MEMS Product Development & Manufacturing
Dr. Helmbrecht has a background in MEMS design, fabrication-process development, integrated circuits, and computer interfaces with MEMS devices. Prior to joining AMFitzgerald, he founded Iris AO, Inc. in 2002 where he developed and manufactured multiple generations of MEMS-based deformable mirrors, drive electronics and software for adaptive-optics systems. His more than 20 years of experience in MEMS incorporates a broad set of skills covering concept development, design, feasibility studies, process development, packaging, test system development, electronics interfaces, software, and production. Dr. Helmbrecht received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley.
Farzad Khademolhosseini, Ph.D., Design, Analysis & Fabrication
Dr. Khademolhosseini has been performing research, design, process development, fabrication and testing in the fields of MEMS and BioMEMS for more than 7 years. He has worked on various MEMS and BioMEMS devices, including polymer based BioMEMS for medical & biological applications and MEMS accelerometers and gyroscopes for inertial sensing applications. He also has experience in sterile techniques, biological assays, cell-culture and bio-compatibility/bio-functionality analysis of BioMEMS devices. He is the recipient of the Vanier CGS Award from the Government of Canada. Dr. Khademolhosseini received his B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology and M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of British Columbia.
Korene Mangelsen, Office Administration
Ms. Mangelsen has over 25 years of administrative experience and is responsible for overseeing the company's front office. She has a diverse background, working in the private and nonprofit sector serving San Mateo County. Ms. Mangelsen has a B.A. in Sociology.
Carolyn D. White, Ph.D., Design, Analysis & Fabrication
Dr. White has a background in mechanics of materials and specializes in the design and fabrication of MEMS devices for a wide range of range of applications, which have included electrostatic actuators, microfluidics, and piezoelectric devices. She has additional experience in technology strategic analysis including of the evaluation of patent portfolios, feasibility studies, and cost/performance analysis. With over 15 years of experience in MEMS, Dr. White previously worked for Lucent Technologies and she is an active member of the MEMS & Sensors Industry Group, previously serving on its Technical Advisory Committee. Dr. White received her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Brown University and M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
Xue'en (Suzanne) Yang, Ph.D., Design, Integration & Simulation
Dr. Yang has over 15 years of academic and industrial experiences in device and process development of MEMS. She has worked extensively on developing micro devices such as microvalve, tunable capacitor, accelerometer, bolometer, micromirror and gyroscope, among others. She was formerly with Analog Devices as a process development engineer and with Teledyne DALSA as a design and product engineer. She also did consulting work for a startup prior to joining AMFitzgerald. Her expertise and interests span multi-physics design, modeling, layout, microfabrication, characterization and system integration. She obtained her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from U.C. Berkeley and M.S. and Ph.D. from MIT. She holds two patents.
