Staff MEMS Developer - Job Description

We are looking for an experienced MEMS engineer who thrives on intellectual variety and who can manage multiple diverse projects simultaneously, with timelines varying from one month to several years. You will work as both an individual contributor and a project manager to develop and design prototypes of a wide variety of microtechnologies including MEMS and MEMS-adjacent (e.g. photonics, free space optics, biomedical) sensors and actuators for consumer, medical, industrial, and AI infrastructure end uses. Typical project work will consist of requirements specification, feasibility studies, chip design and modeling, process integration, managing prototyping and low volume production, test plan development, electronics and package design, and foundry transfer. You will also advise colleagues and be a key technical contact to our customers.

This position will provide career growth opportunities not found in typical corporate engineering jobs: you will have regular interaction with C-level executives at companies and foundries in the global MEMS industry and with venture investors; opportunity for business travel to Europe and Asia; and public speaking, patenting and publication opportunities.

Required

  • Self-directed and organized, with a can-do attitude, proven multi-tasker

  • Can tolerate ambiguity and a variable workload (which can range from 30-50 hours/week)

  • Excellent engineering fundamentals, with an MS or PhD degree in Engineering or Physics

  • At least 6 years with a PhD or 8 years with an MS of MEMS or MEMS-adjacent design development and process integration experience in a commercial setting and ideally with a variety of device types

  • Project management or technical team leadership experience

  • Finite element modeling (ANSYS or COMSOL)

  • English fluency; excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • You must be able to work onsite at our Burlingame, CA office at least 3 days per week

  • You must already be authorized to work in the USA (US citizen, green card or valid visa). Our company uses E-Verify to validate documents

Preferred

  • Optical MEMS design (mirrors, gratings, Fabry-Perot, etc.)

  • Ultrasound MEMS design for ranging and imaging (PMUT, CMUT)

  • Photomask design skills (L-edit preferred)

  • SolidWorks CAD skills

  • Basic circuit and/or photonics design

  • Sensor readout, control and/or wireless communications circuit design (board-level or ASIC interface)

  • Electrical and physical sensor testing (wafer or chip-level)

  • MEMS package design and assembly

  • Matlab, C, or Python programming

  • Embedded system programming

  • Hands-on MEMS or semiconductor fabrication experience (university fab experience is acceptable)

  • Experience with transfer to foundry, foundry process platforms and foundry production

Company Benefits

  • Base salary plus variable based on performance

  • Paid time off

  • Medical, dental, vision plan and life insurance benefit

  • 401k plan

  • Profit-sharing bonuses

Sofant engaged AMFitzgerald to translate a MEMS process which had been originally developed at a university fab into a process suitable for commercial foundry production. AMFitzgerald then fabricated and delivered prototypes, validating the new process and enabling the company to raise further capital. The engagement was a success and the process was subsequently transferred into a 200 mm high volume foundry.
